How to get your restaurant found in Google and recommended by AI
Google and AI assistants build their restaurant answers from the same few places: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, the big listing sites, and the words on your own website. Fix your Google profile first, then put your menu, hours and booking link on your site as plain text, because those are the parts you control.
Where do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI get restaurant answers?
Google. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index as normal Google Search. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special tricks to appear in them. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google also asks owners to keep their Business Profile up to date. For the map results, Google ranks by three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance, and prominence (how well known you are, including your reviews). Google states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
ChatGPT. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes works with other search providers, and names Microsoft. It may share a user's approximate location with "trusted third-party providers" to give local results, and reservation availability may come from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp. To be eligible, your website has to allow OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot). OpenAI also says placement is not guaranteed.
Perplexity. Perplexity agreed in 2024 to use Yelp data, including maps, photos and review quotes, in its answers. In 2025 it added Tripadvisor ratings and photos for hotel searches.
What the studies show. A Yext analysis of 6.8 million AI citations (October 2025) found that 86% came from sources a business can manage or strongly influence: its website, its listings and its reviews. In food service, listings made up 41.6% of citations, and reviews and social posts 13.3%, the highest share of any industry studied. A Foundation study of AI answers from Q4 2025 counted 14,100 restaurant citations for Yelp, against 4,327 for Tripadvisor, 4,123 for Uber Eats, 2,506 for DoorDash and 2,357 for OpenTable.
Guests are already asking. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of US consumers, 45% said they had used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier.
Which AI is best for restaurant recommendations?
There is no single answer, and it changes often. Each assistant uses different partners and data, as shown above. For a restaurant, that means one thing: be correct and complete in all the main places, not just one.
What should I fix first?
Work through these in order. Most of them cost nothing but time.
- Your Google Business Profile. Check the name, address, phone number, main category, opening hours and holiday hours. Add attributes such as outdoor seating or vegetarian options, a menu link, a booking link and recent photos. Google says menu changes can take 24 to 48 hours to show.
- Your menu on your website, as text. A PDF or a photo of the menu is hard for search tools to read. Put dish names, short descriptions, dietary notes and prices on a normal web page. Google says it may transcribe menu data from your website for your profile.
- The same facts everywhere. Hours, address, phone and booking link should match on Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable or Resy, Apple Maps, Facebook and your Instagram bio. Apple Maps is worth the time: in BrightLocal's 2026 survey, the share of consumers using it to read reviews rose from 14% to 27%.
- Reviews, recent and answered. Ask happy guests to leave a review, every week. In the same survey, 74% of consumers cared about reviews from the last three months, 89% expected owners to reply, and 50% were put off by generic or templated replies. Reply in your own words.
- Structured data on your site. Google's local business markup lets you state your cuisine, menu URL, opening hours and price range in code. Keep it identical to what the page shows. Google says no special AI files or markup are needed beyond this.
- Let the crawlers in. Make sure your site's robots.txt does not block Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Ask whoever runs your website to check this once.
How do I get my restaurant recommended by ChatGPT for free?
Everything in the list above is free to do yourself. The paid part is only your time, or help if you want it. Two warnings. Do not buy or write fake reviews: Google's policies ban fake engagement and remove it. And do not seed fake posts on Reddit or food forums; it tends to backfire on small businesses, and we could not find reliable data that it works.
How can I see what AI says about my restaurant today?
Ask the questions your guests ask. Try "best [your cuisine] near [your area] for a birthday dinner" in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and look at Google's AI answer for the same search. Note what is missing or wrong: old hours, a closed branch, a menu from two years ago. That list is your to-do list. If you would rather we do it, the free AI check below covers it.
How do I use AI for my restaurant?
Beyond search, the most useful jobs for small restaurants are simple ones: answering the phone when the team is busy, confirming and reminding bookings, and following up after a visit to ask for a review. You can see what we set up for restaurants on our hospitality page.
What we can't promise
Nobody can promise that Google or any AI assistant will recommend your restaurant. Google says so about its own map results, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. The assistants change their sources often. What you can do is make sure every place they look shows the right, complete and recent facts about you. That improves your chances. It does not guarantee a result, and anyone who guarantees one is guessing.
