How to sell perfume online when people can't smell it

You sell perfume online by replacing the smell with three things: words that describe what the wearer will feel, a cheap way to try it on skin, and a promise that lowers the risk of the full bottle. In practice that means plain sensory scent descriptions instead of bare note lists, a discovery set or sample whose price comes off the full bottle, films and photos that set the mood, reviews that talk about how long it lasts, and a clear sample and returns policy. The help you need is a site builder who can write and film for scent, not just design a store.

Film: Maison Vérane Rouge No. 6. A short product film we made for Maison Vérane: the scent told as a mood, warm rose, amber and a trace of smoke.

Why is perfume so hard to sell online?

Two reasons. First, many people simply won't buy blind. Mintel's Clare Hennigan told CosmeticsDesign that roughly 30% of US fragrance users say they would not buy a fragrance they haven't smelled in person (CosmeticsDesign, 2023). Your site has to win the other 70% and give the 30% a way to smell first.

Second, English is bad at smell. In a study published in Cognition, Asifa Majid and Niclas Burenhult found English speakers correctly named familiar smells such as coffee, banana and chocolate only about half the time, and their descriptions of smells were five times longer than their descriptions of colors. They fell back on sources ("like a banana") and judgments ("that's disgusting") (ScienceDaily, 2014). That is why "bergamot, iris, ambroxan" on a product page tells most shoppers almost nothing. They need sources, places and feelings they already know.

How do you describe a scent so people can imagine it?

Keep the notes pyramid, because fragrance people look for it, but put a plain-language layer on top. We write every product description in this order:

  1. One line on the feeling. "Clean white shirt, warm skin, late afternoon." Not "an olfactory ode to sensuality."
  2. The first ten minutes. What you smell when you spray it, in things people know: "sharp, like peeling an orange."
  3. The heart. What it settles into: "soft and powdery, like the inside of a handbag that held lipstick."
  4. The dry-down. What is left on your wrist hours later: "warm wood and something sweet, close to the skin."
  5. When and who. Office or evening, summer or winter, loud or quiet. Say it plainly.
  6. "If you like…" Name the familiar smell or the style it sits next to: "if you like fresh laundry and fig leaves." Avoid naming other brands' perfumes as dupes unless you have legal advice.
  7. The notes pyramid last, for the experts: top, heart and base notes as a short list.

Then tag each scent by fragrance family so shoppers can filter. The best-known system is Michael Edwards' Fragrance Wheel, which groups scents into families such as floral, oriental, woody and fresh, each split from light to rich (Basenotes). A short scent finder ("What do you wear now? When will you wear this?") that ends on two or three scents and a discovery set does more than a long quiz.

Reel for Rouge No. 6, cut from the same film for Instagram and TikTok.

Should you sell samples and discovery sets?

Yes. For a perfume brand selling online, the discovery set is often the real first product. Two data points show how shoppers use them. Adobe Digital Insights data reported by WWD found sample and discovery sets made up roughly 27% of fragrance sales in the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday 2024 (WWD, 2024). And Circana, reporting on 2025, said prestige fragrance grew 5% in dollars and that the popularity of mini sizes remained influential (Circana, February 2026).

Three models work, from cheapest to run to most generous:

ModelHow it worksExampleBest for
Paid sample of one scentA 1 to 2 ml vial sold as a variant of the full bottleA vial offered right on the full-size product pageBrands with one or two hero scents
Discovery set with creditA set of small vials; its price comes off the next full-size orderEditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle says the cost of its sample set "will be automatically applied" to a later full-size purchase, a $20 credit as of October 2026 (Frédéric Malle)Brands with three or more scents
Try before you buyShip the sealed full bottle with a sample; the customer returns the bottle unopened if they don't like the sampleSnif ships a 30 ml bottle with a 2 ml sample, gives 7 days, and only charges for what you keep; once the seal is broken the bottle can't be returned (Snif)Brands with healthy margins and good return handling

Whatever model you choose, the follow-up decides whether a sample becomes a bottle. Send an email a few days after the set arrives with one question ("Which one did you keep reaching for?") and a one-click link to each full size with the credit already applied. For Maison Vérane, a fragrance house selling a $145 perfume online, any order can start with a sample at home, and a follow-up email and text bring the buyer back to the full bottle.

What films and photos make people want a scent?

Photos of a bottle on white prove the product exists. They don't sell the smell. For perfume, the visuals have to carry the mood the words describe:

  • The bottle in its world. If the scent is "fig leaves and warm stone," shoot it on warm stone with fig leaves. Ingredients in frame help people borrow memories they have.
  • Light and color that match the family. Bright, cool light for fresh scents, low warm light for amber and woody ones.
  • A 10 to 20 second loop at the top of the product page: the spray in slow motion, skin, fabric moving, the place the scent belongs to. No voiceover needed.
  • Scale and honesty. One shot of the bottle in a hand so the 50 ml looks like 50 ml, and one of the sample vial so nobody is surprised by how small it is.
  • The same mood everywhere. Instagram, ads and the site should feel like one place, or the ad promises a scent the site doesn't show.

Mood films can be shot or made with AI and motion design, as long as the bottle shown is the real bottle. Our guide to AI product videos for beauty brands covers when AI works and when you need a camera.

What should fragrance reviews ask?

A star rating says little about a perfume. Shoppers want to know what other people experienced on their own skin. Add three or four short questions to your review form and show the answers as filters:

  • How long did it last on you? (under 2 hours, a work day, into the next day)
  • How far did it carry? (close to the skin, arm's length, fills a room)
  • When do you wear it? (day, evening, summer, winter)
  • What does it remind you of? (free text, which often gives you your best description)

Collect reviews from sample buyers too, since they are your largest group of real testers. Keep it honest: the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews, including AI-generated reviews from people who don't exist, and bans rewards conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment. It also bans claiming your review section shows all or most reviews when negative ones have been hidden (FTC, August 2024).

What return and sample policy should a perfume brand have?

Shoppers compare you to the big retailers. Sephora generally accepts returns within 30 days of purchase of products in "new or gently used condition," while saying it may limit returns based on return activity (Sephora). A small brand usually can't resell an opened bottle, so most choose one of these:

  1. Unopened returns only, plus a sample first. The sample is the trial; the sealed bottle can come back. This is the easiest to run.
  2. Sample in every full-size order. Ship a vial of the same scent with the sealed bottle and accept the bottle back unopened if the vial disappoints. This is the Snif model on a smaller scale.
  3. One opened return per customer. Generous, costly, and worth it only if your margins can absorb a written-off bottle.

Write the policy in two sentences and put it next to the buy button, not only in the footer.

How should you set up Shopify for perfume?

  • Sizes as variants. Sample, travel and full size on one product page, so reviews and the description stay together. Shopify treats each combination of option values as a variant (Shopify Help Center).
  • The discovery set as its own product, with a unique discount code or an automatic credit sent in the follow-up email.
  • Ground-only shipping for perfume. USPS says perfume containing alcohol may not be mailed domestically by air or shipped internationally, though it may be shipped within the United States by ground (USPS). Shopify lets you create up to 99 custom shipping profiles with different rates for different products (Shopify Help Center), so put your fragrances in a profile with ground services only and tell customers the delivery time honestly.
  • Ingredients on the page. FDA accepts a website as the place to show the ingredient list for mail-order sales, and does not object to "Fragrance (Parfum)" as the English name with the French term in brackets (FDA). Watch the fragrance allergen rule: under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act, FDA expects to publish a proposed rule in November 2026 that would identify fragrance allergens that must be disclosed on labels (ChemLinked).
  • The plan. As of October 2026, Shopify Basic is $29 a month billed yearly ($39 monthly) with online card rates of 2.9% + 30¢ (Shopify pricing). It is enough for most new fragrance brands.

Product page layout, checkout and speed work the same way for perfume as for skincare; our guide on selling skincare on Shopify covers those in detail.

What we can't promise

No page, film or sample program can make a scent people don't like sell. What the site can do is get the right scent onto the right skin faster and make the full bottle feel like a safe second step. We also don't give legal or shipping-compliance advice: check dangerous goods rules with your carrier and labeling with a regulatory specialist, especially before shipping abroad.

Questions people ask

How do you describe a perfume on a product page?

Start with one line on the feeling, then describe the first minutes, the heart and the dry-down in smells people already know, such as orange peel or clean laundry. Say when and where to wear it, then list the top, heart and base notes last for experts. Research by Majid and Burenhult found English speakers struggle to name smells, so familiar comparisons work better than note names alone.

Are perfume discovery sets worth selling?

Usually, yes, because they let a shopper try scents on their own skin before paying for a full bottle. Adobe Digital Insights data reported by WWD found sample and discovery sets made up roughly 27% of fragrance sales from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday 2024. Crediting the set's price toward the full bottle, as Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle does, gives buyers a reason to come back.

Can I ship perfume with USPS?

Within the United States, yes, by ground. USPS says perfume containing alcohol may not be mailed domestically by air or shipped internationally, but it may be shipped within the US by ground transportation. Set your store's fragrance shipping to ground-only services and state delivery times honestly.

Should a perfume brand accept returns of opened bottles?

Most small brands accept only unopened bottles and offer a sample first, because an opened bottle usually can't be resold. Another option is to ship a sample vial with every sealed full bottle and accept the bottle back unopened if the sample disappoints. Whatever you choose, write the policy in two sentences next to the buy button.

What should a perfume review form ask?

Ask how long the scent lasted, how far it carried, and when the reviewer wears it, and show those answers as filters. Add a free-text question about what the scent reminds them of. Under the FTC's 2024 rule, you cannot post fake reviews or offer rewards conditioned on a positive or negative review.

Who can help me sell perfume online?

Look for a studio that can write scent descriptions, set up samples and discovery sets on your store, and make mood films, not just design pages. Project 66 Studio builds fragrance stores on Shopify with copy, films and search set up in one project, with new websites from $799.
